Photography Is Dead, Long Live Photography

More cameras, fewer photographers. As this new day dawns outside my window, I pose a simple yet profound question: Is there still truth in photography?
Damn you, Eddie.
“People believe them, but photographs do lie, even without manipulation. They are only half-truths.”

Eddie Adams said that. You can read it for yourself in his 1998 short-piece Eulogy: GENERAL NGUYEN NGOC LOAN for Time Magazine.

That particular handful of words have rattled around in my head since the first reading. It's like some bad connection dialing up a phone call across time.

The Nano-X Pro filter system proves there's still a place for those who try to get it right in camera.

It's no secret that I enjoy taking the "scenic route" when it comes to photography. For better or worse, these days most of my work orbits around non-digital and historical techniques.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no purist when it comes to photography. An idealist? Maybe.

For many of us, photography has been an outlet for processing loss, grief, and our connection to humanity. One photographer takes us along his own journey in the literal footsteps of his ancestors — through the viewfinders of their very own cameras.

How to Convert the CHUZHAO Mini TLR to Infrared

The CHUZHAO Mini TLR was one of the most unexpectedly popular digital cameras to hit the consumer market in 2025. In this short video, I'll show you how to shoot infrared photography with this viral toy camera.

It was an undertaking completely devoid of logic outside all rational photographic understanding. I'm not sure what possessed me to attempt to use this tiny plastic camera for infrared photography. Much like the summit of Mount Everest, perhaps I wanted to undertake this ridiculous experiment simply because it was there.

Historical and alternative printing has experienced a popular resurgence in recent years. Let me show you how to make a cheap and easy lightbox for printing cyanotypes, salt prints, and other alternative printing processes.

More and more photographers are learning that historical and alternative printmaking can be one of the most accessible and rewarding of all printing processes. The materials are more accessible than ever, and it takes very little to produce quality prints right in your own home.

Some of the world's greatest ideas arise not from attempting to reinvent the wheel but by finding an easier way to make it roll. The AGO Film Processor from Vintage Visual is one such story.

As soon as I cracked open the box from Vintage Visual and laid eyes on the AGO Film Processor, six small yet all-too-familiar words leaped from my brain in a gush of envy: "Why didn't I think of that?"

Are squares better? Come with me as we throw a fork in the photographic microwave and investigate why you shouldn't underestimate the 1:1 image format.

Now… about that microwave.

We begin our little journey into the world of square format photography by addressing the glaring elephant in the room: there is no truly “better” image format when it comes to photography.

As argumentative as some of us can be about which framing ratio works best for certain types of photography, the sort of discussion we’re about to have is, in the end, a wholly subjective one.

The photography world is full of questions. Many of these questions are met with few answers and even fewer absolutes. Perhaps the biggest question of all is: “Do photographers exist today?”

This far-reaching and highly existential query concerning the nature of photography as an occupation takes its place among other high-brow and worthy contemplations that often creep up from the back of my mind when the hour grows late:

Does the universe have a plan for all of us? For Austrian-born photographer and artist Markus Hofstätter, the stars unexpectedly aligned for him to receive his Leica M2: a camera which seemingly transcended the depths of time and grief to find its way into his hands.

I've long been a believer in photographic destiny. Some photographers encounter certain cameras or lenses and something just "switches on" inside our brains. At times, it feels as if we were meant to possess these tools, and for them to possess us in return.

Across the vast millennia of human existence, the total solar eclipse remains the most spectacular and celebrated of astronomical phenomena. As the blue sky dimmed, I suddenly decided to shoot the 2024 solar eclipse on black and white film using my trusty Hasselblad 500 C/M.

Capturing a photograph of a total solar eclipse ranks high on many photographers' bucket lists.

Willie Nelson has played the same Martin N-20 nylon-string acoustic guitar since 1969. Serial number 242830. The instrument is an eternal flame of creative freedom, one of a kind and beautiful — just like Willie.

A more mainstream musician might insist no true professional should ever lower themselves to pick at those strings. You’ll find no technical or acoustic benefits flowing from a 50-year-old guitar with a giant hole worn in the belly.

Why Are Some Photographers Choosing to Go back In Time?

Not every idea is golden, and not all camera systems are destined to become legends. Digital photography has always grown by leaps and stumbles.

Yesterday’s fresh feature inevitably becomes tomorrow’s standard issue. Each successive photographic breakthrough rests atop the foundations that came before. This is the natural way of things.

At the heart of any digital camera body is its sensor. No matter if it’s CCD, CMOS, Bayer, X-Trans, cropped or full-frame, it’s the sensor that puts the digits in digital imaging.
