The Problem With Fisheye Portraits (And How the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 Fisheye Fixes It)

Most photographers will tell you the same thing: don't use a fisheye for portraits.

It distorts faces. It bends lines. It makes people look weird. And honestly, they're not wrong.

But they're also not thinking about it the right way.

For one of our recent shoots, we built an entire portrait concept around the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DG DN Diagonal Fisheye | Art. Not in spite of what it does, but because of it. Instead of trying to control or minimize distortion, we designed everything to work with it.

Do You Really Need a Photo Studio to Make Great Photos?

One of the most common comments we get online is, "One day I'll create when I have a studio."

So David and I decided to challenge that idea. Over the next 100 days, we are building 25 photo sets inside our attic.

And yes, I mean our actual attic. Technically it used to be our bedroom. We live in a Cape Cod house, so the top story is more like a half story than a full upstairs. The previous owners converted the space before we moved in, so when we bought the house we simply kept using it that way.

The Thing Most Photographers Skip That Completely Changes Their Work

Most photographs never leave a screen. We printed the same image three different ways and discovered how much presentation changes not just the photo, but the way you shoot.

Usually, photos get edited, posted, maybe shared, and then they live their entire life as a glowing rectangle in someone’s hand. That workflow has become so normal that many photographers never stop to question it. But while screens are convenient, they are not the full experience of a photograph.

Your Photography Is Working, So Why Do You Still Feel Creatively Stuck?

Most photographers do not get creatively stuck because they stop shooting. They get stuck because their process becomes too efficient.

That is where we were. Then I heard this quote by the art critic Jerry Saltz, and it unlocked something. This was the quote.

“Art is slow, physical, resistant, material; it involves an ongoing commitment to doing the same thing differently over and over again.”— Jerry Saltz

We all know the feeling when a shoot is going perfectly, your model is nailing the poses, and then something goes wrong. Maybe a light fails, a cable gets unplugged, or your tether connection drops mid-shoot. Suddenly, the creative flow evaporates, and you’re scrambling to regroup.

Adding a little set design to your studio photography can add huge value for your clients and really set your work apart. Today, I’m sharing three DIY sets you can create with simple materials from the hardware store—no power tools required.

At its core, a photo set is just a backdrop plus a posing element. In photography, set design (sometimes called set styling) is the process of creating and arranging the physical environment for your shoot. It’s all about crafting a visual space that supports the concept, mood, and story of your images.

Many photographers know the frustration of walking away from a shoot where everything looked right—but something still felt off. The lighting was clean, the model nailed every pose, the gear performed flawlessly—and yet, the images don’t land the way they should. Here's why.

Below are five steps you can take before your next creative shoot to help your ideas land with more impact. These aren’t overly complex—they’re accessible to anyone at any level, and they’ll help you create images that feel more purposeful, layered, and emotionally resonant.

The Viral Reel That Sparked The AI vs. Real Debate in Photography

As AI tools improve, we all have to ask: What kind of creativity do we value most? Is it the idea? The process? The perfection or the imperfections? That’s not a bad thing. It’s a sign that art is still evolving.

My creative partner and I combine photography with set design to take colorful, surreal photos. We recently posted a behind-the-scenes reel from one of our older photoshoots, expecting it to be a casual glimpse into our process. What we didn’t expect? A full-blown debate about whether it was “worth it” to build a set by hand in 2025.

Using Lighting to Tell a Story

Photographers talk about lighting all the time—how to shape it, soften it, bounce it—but we don’t talk enough about how lighting can tell a story. It doesn’t just illuminate a scene; it sets the emotional tone and builds the narrative.

I like to think of lighting as the soundtrack of a photo. You know how, in a movie, you can sense something scary is about to happen based on the music? Lighting does the same thing in a photo. It’s one of the most powerful visual tools we have for setting the mood.

Creating Dramatic Black and White Photos in Monochrome Mode

I’m obsessed with color. Like, deeply. Bold tones, dreamy palettes, warm hues—color is one of the main reasons I fell in love with photography. But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the raw emotion and timeless feel of a strong black and white photo.

So I decided to challenge myself: create a series of moody black and white images and shoot them like I meant it.

DIY Theatrical Portraits: Using a Spotlight

I've been seeing spotlights used in shoots everywhere, so I wanted to jump on the trend and put my own twist on a spotlight shoot. Here’s how my creative partner, David, and I created a theatrical portrait session using a spotlight.

A spotlight is a pretty stylized light source to use because it directs a narrow, intense beam of light onto a specific area. Unlike broader light sources that spread light more evenly, a spotlight is designed to highlight or isolate certain details, creating sharp contrasts between light and shadow.

Is it really necessary to have your own photo studio? Here's why I let go of my own photo studio and use PeerSpace instead.

In 2013, I launched my professional photography career, setting up shop in the spare bedroom of my small apartment. Having my own photo studio was my ultimate dream back then. Yet, the only route to access one was by leasing one —a far-off goal at that point.

Sometimes, the simplest ideas can create some really cool images. Here’s how I created a fun and colorful DIY photoshoot backdrop for less than $25.

With summer approaching its final days, I found myself wanting to do a photoshoot to capture the essence of summer in a vibrant and playful photoshoot. Inspiration struck me unexpectedly one night as I lounged on the couch, watching a movie. You never know when inspiration will hit, but when it does, it is pretty exciting.

Can metallic spandex work in a photoshoot? See how we built an entire photography set using metallic spandex and some of the challenges we faced along the way.

My husband, David, is an artist and set designer, and always loves experimenting with new materials. We’d been seeing a lot of photographers doing shoots with Mylar and loved the results. Since so many photographers have already done shoots using Mylar, we wanted to try something a little different. David and I decided to build a photography set using metallic spandex instead.

It’s been a minute since I shot color film. I’ve been shooting digital on a Canon 5D Mark IV for years. How does The Canon EOS-1N RS with Portra 400 compare?

I used to shoot color film regularly on everything from 35mm to large format cameras, but ever since I became a full-time photographer, I’ve only shot digitally using my Canon 5D Mark IV. With client work, digital is so much more of a guarantee and so much faster. I do love the look and feel of film, though.

When it comes to photoshoot locations, few things can top a cave. This was a wild photoshoot adventure.

We were looking for the best places to photograph in the Mojave Desert and got so excited when we stumbled across Lava Tube. Lava Tube is one of the most popular attractions at Mojave National Preserve. If you're not familiar with what a lava tube is, don't worry, I wasn't either.

According to Google:

a lava tube is formed when molten lava flows beneath the hardened surface of a lava flow, creating a hollow tunnel
