The Lighting Secret: How to Create Epic Light Anywhere

The biggest hurdle many photographers face when jumping into off-camera flash isn't the gear or the settings; it's the "where." We often find ourselves in a beautiful location with boring light, and we struggle to know how to fix the issue. If you've ever looked at a scene and felt stuck because the lighting didn't match your vision, the solution isn't more gear. The solution is learning how to "see" light patterns and then recreating them from scratch.

The Sony a7R VI Somehow Beat Sony's Own Flagship

Sony just released a camera that outperforms their own flagship model and costs $2,000 less. That's not a headline you expect to write, but here we are.

The a7R VI comes in at under $4,499.99. The a1 II sits at $6,500 and is supposed to be the best Sony has to offer. After spending a week with the a7R VI, using it for family documentary work and studio sessions, and comparing it spec-for-spec against the a1 II, the conclusion is hard to argue with: the a7R VI beats the a1 II in almost every meaningful way.

Wacom MovinkPad 11: Is the Best Pen in the Business Enough?

The Wacom MovinkPad 11 represents an interesting pivot for a company known primarily for professional-grade tethered displays. By moving into the standalone Android space, Wacom is targeting the "on-the-go" artist who wants the legendary Wacom pen feel without being chained to a desk. However, after spending time with the device, it becomes clear that while it excels in certain professional niches, it faces stiff competition from more versatile hardware.

First Look: The MagMod MagStand 9 Pro and 11 Pro

Light stands are rarely the most exciting part of a gear bag, but MagMod is clearly looking to change that. I've been putting a pre-production unit through its paces, and it's a refreshing departure from the "knob-twisting" workflow we've all grown accustomed to. If you've used MagMod modifiers, you know their philosophy is all about speed and modularity. The new MagStand 9 Pro and MagStand 11 Pro carry that same DNA.

The DJI RS 5 isn’t just a minor iteration; it is a thoughtful evolution of what a mirrorless gimbal should be. While it maintains the familiar silhouette of the RS series, the quality-of-life upgrades—particularly regarding balance and automation—make it one of the most frictionless tools I’ve used in the field.

Sony Built the Wrong Camera: The Biggest Problem

There is a specific feeling you get when you pick up a piece of technology that truly feels like a "masterpiece." It is dense, tactile, and seemingly crafted without compromise. In the world of digital photography, few devices evoke this feeling quite like the Sony RX1R series.

A Week in Aruba With the Sony a7 V: A Real-World Review

The Sony a7 series is designed for the user who wants to do it all. Thanks to a brand-new 33 MP partially stacked sensor boasting 16 stops of dynamic range, the new Sony a7 V is capable of even more than its predecessors.

I have used the Sony a7 V for about a week and have already captured around 6,000 images. After taking it on a family trip to Aruba, as well as for a couple of mini portrait sessions, I want to share some real-world insights, show what it can do, and help determine if this is the right camera for you.

The Bright Choice for New Video Shooters: Viltrox DC-A1 Monitor Review

When you’re just dipping your toes into video, the last thing you want is gear that holds you back or drains your wallet. I needed a monitor that was powerful enough to handle bright outdoor shoots but still stayed firmly in the affordable range (since professional video isn't my main gig). That’s why the Viltrox DC-A1, a 7-inch on-camera unit, caught my eye. At $278 with a truly stacked accessory kit, it looked like a steal. But does this budget-friendly monitor live up to the hype?

For photographers seeking the perfect balance between in-camera creativity and personal style, the quest often leads to a crossroads. On one hand, you have the instant gratification of in-camera film simulations offered by brands like Fujifilm, which deliver stunning, ready-to-share images straight out of the camera. On the other hand, there's the professional's need for a consistent, personalized aesthetic, often achieved through meticulous post-processing and custom presets.

When it comes to digital photography, I think editing is as important as the darkroom was for film photography. But now, we have a lot more tools at our disposal.

In the video attached, I show a handful of my favorite images and walk through every step I took to get from the raw file to the delivered image. Rather than transcribe the video into written form, I thought I’d outline some key points that make for a great edit.

Evoto Vs. Retouch4me: Is One Better Than The Other?

For me, there are two heavy hitters in the AI retouching market: Evoto and Retouch4me. But is one better than the other?

While both have the ability to leverage AI to speed up your retouching process, one of these definitely has more capability over the other. But where one software lacks in capability, it shines in convenience while still maintaining great quality. So let’s dive into each software a bit and see what they can do (and can’t do), as well as see why I think there’s a place for both within your retouching workflow.

Thypoch recently released the Simera 28mm f/1.4 lens in native Sony E-mount. Let’s see if it's worth buying.

To kick things off, I’m fairly new to the manual focus lens world, but after diving into adding the Sony a7C R to my bag as a sort of everyday carry camera, having a lens that’s a bit more nuanced in its handling has become of interest to me. And because my camera has a bit more of a vintage vibe with its color scheme, the aesthetics of a vintage-style manual lens like the Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4 don't hurt either.
