Bad Weather, Better Photos? Street and Urban Photography in the Rain

Most photographers put the camera away when it rains, but I believe this is a huge mistake. I've found that some of my best photos are made when it's raining, and I make the effort to embrace it. Let's talk about why.

The images in this article were shot recently on a trip to Bilbao, Spain. Everything was photographed on a Nikon Z6 III, which is weather-sealed and offered plenty of confidence.

APS-C cameras are quickly becoming the main choice for everyday photography. I've owned a Nikon Z50 for seven years now, and it's still my favorite everyday camera, especially for travel, street, and urban photography. But finding lenses for it has always been a problem.

Freewell Launches a Very Slim Variable ND/CPL Filter Kit

My first impression when pulling Freewell's latest filter kit offering out of its packaging was how small and light it was. Filter kits tend to be bulky and take up lots of space, often housed in boxes that take up valuable space in camera bags too. They can be a nuisance to lug around. Not this kit. I immediately liked it.

Leica Lenses Are Expensive: Here's a Smart Alternative From Funleader

Buying a Leica M camera, be it a film or digital model, has become a dream for many. There is immense pleasure in holding a little M rangefinder—it just oozes quality, and using it is one of photography's greatest pleasures. And let's be honest, that red dot gives you some serious street cred.

The problem many of us run into is that once we've scraped enough pennies together to buy a Leica, we then have the issue of buying glass for it. Leica lenses cost a small fortune, and owning two to three focal lengths is often just not financially viable.

6 of the Best Street and Travel Photography Shoulder Bags

Travel and street photographers need a bag—but something too big draws attention and can become a burden if it's on your shoulder and you're on your feet all day. The other option is a backpack, but they tend to be too big and bulky, and can become a nuisance when you're in a crowd. I can't tell you the number of times I've turned to take a shot and ended up knocking into someone with a pack on my back. The answer, then, is a very small shoulder bag or sling—so small and well-shaped you barely notice you have it.

Much of the time, we take photographs because of how something looks. We’re drawn to pretty views with nice light or color; views that look visually appealing. Let’s be clear: there’s nothing wrong with this approach to photography.

If you’re shooting fast-moving sports or wildlife, or you’re a videographer shooting long takes in a raw format and high resolution, the most essential piece of gear you need is a fast reliable memory card. Choosing one, however, can be a nightmare. So what do you do? I would guess you buy one from a reputable brand, right? That makes sense, but recently I discovered there’s a lot of marketing smoke-and-mirrors going on—and I thought you should know about it.

A New Polarizing Filter Designed for Winter Photography

When PolarPro sent me their new Arctic circular polarizer, I was quite excited. This new polarizer has been designed specifically for winter photography in cold, harsh conditions.

As luck would have it, they sent the filter to the right person. I know a thing or two about shooting in harsh winter conditions, living in Canada. A typical winter often sees me out shooting in minus 26 degrees Celsius. I’ve been on photographic assignments to the Arctic and shot in as low as minus 62 degrees Celsius on occasion. Cold is my photographic collaborator.

Choosing The Best Prime Lens: Size Matters

There are so many fabulous prime lenses that have been launched these past 12 months—and continue to be launched—it’s hard to know which direction to go if you’re looking to buy a new one. The choice can be overwhelming and confusing.

An example that has stood out for me recently is 35mm primes. Viltrox has an astoundingly good, yet large, 35mm f/1.2 LAB. In comparison, there’s Artizlab’s tiny Classic 35mm f/1.4. Two 35mm lenses new to market, both shoot very fast. One weighs around 970 g—the other, a mere 157 g. It is quite a difference.

Every year, I make it a ritual to look back at the photographs I’ve taken—not just to see if I ended up with a set of images I’m actually happy with, but to understand what they say about me. Reviewing a year’s worth of images can reveal patterns you didn’t know were there: the subjects you’re drawn to, the way you use light, the emotions you chase. It’s an honest reflection of who you are as a photographer—and who you’re becoming.

I’ve owned a Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 for a few years now, and it’s been one of two lenses I take everywhere with me, the other being a 35mm f/1.8. I’ve found f/1.8 to be a very handy aperture for low light shooting, but I still encounter a few situations where I need to crank up my ISO, as it’s not quite fast enough. Therefore, I was very curious when Viltrox announced a new f/1.4 85mm in their Pro line.

Why Black and White Photography Is Making a Comeback

In a world oversaturated with colorful images showcasing the latest trends in color editing effects and presets, I’m seeing a quiet and growing resurgence of black and white photography. Why is that? I believe it’s a mix of nostalgic, emotional, and creative reasons. Some of us are seeking to create images with more meaning and purpose. Let’s dive in and discuss.

I should say "My Essential Lens Filters." I get a lot of people asking what I use, so I thought I’d share what they are. I have a few filters that go everywhere with me. Sometimes they reside in a backpack when on an outdoor adventure, or in a small shoulder bag when exploring urban environments. Because they all come in individual cases of varying shapes and sizes, I’ve recently become frustrated carrying them all—but we’ll get to the solutions that address this in a moment.

Not so long ago, a 40mm prime lens was an uncommon sight. When selecting a standard focal length prime lens, the choice was 35mm or 50mm. So why are we seeing so many 40mm primes now? And more importantly, why would we need one?

35mm and 50mm primes have always been the default everyday lenses for decades, perfect for walking around with if you have a full frame digital camera. They were actually the two top choices back in film days too. Most of us only had one of these focal lengths—usually a 50mm, as they were the most affordable.

I’ve been testing the new Lowepro ProTactic BP 450 AW III and I like it—a lot.

I’ve owned a couple of Lowepro backpacks over the years, and they’ve been functional and reliable. I’ve never had a backpack as large as the ProTactic BP 450 AW III, though. With a 28 L total volume, it’s actually a very practical size for two scenarios.

Owning a Leica is merely a dream for many. Their gorgeously designed and incredibly well-made cameras and lenses are expensive. Like a Rolex watch, they’re an indulgent luxury item, and many of us simply cannot justify the cost. If you’ve perused a Leica Store, you’ve probably discovered a new Leica M11 paired with a little APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH will cost you just shy of $20,000.

Where Do You Get Your Photography Inspiration and Influence From?

Inspiration and influence—these are things I’ve been thinking about lately. Why? Because it’s clear to me that so many new photographers are getting their influence from other photographers on social media. This isn’t always a good thing.

The biggest problem I have with learning photography from social media is that just because a certain influencer is popular doesn’t mean they’re actually a great photographer. So if this is your only source of inspiration, you’re learning how not to be a great photographer!

A New Camera From Leica, But What Have They Done!

Leica launches the first M with an integrated electronic viewfinder, the Leica M EV1. But what will the M purists say?

This is a big moment for Leica. Huge, actually. After 71 years of M-rangefinder cameras, Leica is introducing a rangefinder-style M with an EVF instead of a rangefinder patch. Leica purists will hate this; others will embrace it. Sit back with your popcorn, and enjoy the angry comments and endless debates on social media over the coming months.

If you’ve purchased a lovely camera, shouldn’t you buy a lovely, luxurious camera strap for it? That’s a rhetorical question—of course you should! If your camera is your pride and joy—something you’ve aspired to own for a while—and you finally bit the bullet and treated yourself, it’s fitting to give it a beautiful handcrafted shoulder strap. I’ve done this for a couple of my indulgent camera purchases recently, after discovering a surprising number of options when it comes to skillfully crafted leather straps.

I believe great photography is a result of great lighting. As someone who has spent a lot of time traveling and shooting in a variety of conditions, light has always been a top priority. Small portable LED lights started to become popular around 5–6 years ago, when dozens of brands began making a variety of lights in different shapes and sizes. I’ve bought many, keen to try different options out and find the best solutions for when I travel to shoot on location.

Maybe you can relate to this. You have filing cabinets full of negatives and transparencies you shot back in the film days that have remained untouched for decades now. What do you do with them? I’ve tried various scanners over the years, and none have given me the results I want. So I stopped bothering and continued to let them sit in their dark tombs, unloved and forgotten.

Why You Should Travel With a Small Camera

Who doesn’t love going on a trip to explore a new destination with a camera? However, when we’re traveling, weight can be an issue. If we’re flying, there’s only so much gear we can take in our carry-on luggage. When we reach our destination, a heavy, bulky camera and lenses can be a nuisance to take on a stroll and can get conveniently left in the hotel. While on that stroll, we come across something worth photographing and immediately regret not having a camera with us! The answer is to carry a small, light camera that you barely notice you have with you.

My Thoughts—and Solution—To The Film vs. Digital Debate

Some say film photography is better than digital. Film has a more organic, natural look. Shooting with an analogue camera is a better experience and a purer form of photography. Others say digital photography is better because computer technology makes photography easier. You can shoot more frames and focus quicker, and experiment more by shooting more without the need for a second mortgage. Buckle up, this might get ranty.
