This photo was taken at 5:12 PM in the African fall, so it was starting to get dark fast. We were in a custom designed safari photo boat from Pangolin Photo Safari. My Canon R5 with the RF100-500mm lens was lighter than my other camera and lens, I took this camera and held it over the edge of the boat just above the water to get this low angle shot.
Often late in the day the different elephant herds would make their way to the Chobe River at the north edge of Chobe National Park in Botswana to drink. This day was no different. We were just offshore in the photo boat keeping our distance from the elephants. Many were on the shore, others drinking and a few entered the water to cool off as the daytime temperatures were often 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit).
This mother ventured a bit further from the shore and as the baby came closer you could see the concern in its eyes. Here it is standing on its back legs in the water leaning up against mom.
