Sigma Introduces the 15mm f/1.4 DC | Contemporary for APS-C Creators

Sigma has announced a new fast prime for APS-C shooters, the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC | Contemporary. The lens joins the company’s growing set of bright-aperture Contemporary primes and continues Sigma’s recent push toward compact, lightweight designs aimed at hybrid creators and will be offered for Sony E-mount, Fujifilm X Mount, and Canon RF Mount at a retail price of $579.

Positioned as an everyday wide angle option, the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC | Contemporary sits between Sigma’s existing ultra-wide and standard APS-C primes. Sigma notes that this is the second lens in the f/1.4 DC Contemporary series to include a dedicated aperture ring, following the Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC | Contemporary. Canon RF Mount users instead receive a customizable control ring, consistent with Canon’s mirrorless design language.

One of the headline changes is the physical redesign. Compared to the long-standing Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN | Contemporary, Sigma claims an approximately 30% reduction in length along with a smaller 58mm filter thread. At 220 g, the lens becomes the lightest model in the f/1.4 DC Contemporary lineup, a detail that will matter to photographers and video creators working handheld or on lightweight gimbals.

Autofocus is driven by a stepping motor paired with a lightweight focusing group. Sigma specifically highlights high-speed, high-precision AF behavior along with reduced focus breathing, suggesting clear intent toward video use. The optical design is described as prioritizing edge-to-edge sharpness while suppressing sagittal coma flare and minimizing flare and ghosting through simulation-based optimization.

For creators, the appeal is straightforward. A 15mm focal length on APS-C cameras occupies a highly versatile space, wide enough for environmental work, travel scenes, interiors, and general video production, while the f/1.4 aperture supports low-light shooting and shallow depth of field effects. The lighter build directly benefits gimbal balance, long handheld sessions, and compact travel kits. Combined with Sigma’s emphasis on breathing control and aberration management, the lens is clearly designed for hybrid workflows rather than stills alone.

The addition also rounds out Sigma’s APS-C F1.4 Contemporary series, which now spans from the Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC | Contemporary through the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN | Contemporary. That consistency gives APS-C users access to a coherent set of bright primes without forcing a move to full frame systems.
