L'Hemisfèric is a cultural building, planetarium and cinema in the Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias in Valencia, Spain. The building was designed by Santiago Calatrava and opened on 16 April 1998 as the first building in the City of Arts and Sciences in the drained riverbed of the Turia. The architect conceived the building as an oversized human eye - the eye of wisdom, which is intended to symbolise the audiovisual experiences of visitors watching the screenings. The 100-metre-long oval roof houses a 3D IMAX cinema auditorium and the surrounding Carl Sagan Perimeter Ring, named in honour of the US physicist. The entire building is surrounded by 24,000 square metres of water.
