When we decided to explore Iceland’s Highlands in 2021 with a Super Jeep on our own, we knew there was one place we absolutely had to visit: Kerlingarfjöll.
Although having such a vehicle isn’t strictly necessary to get there, it’s definitely recommended to go with a high-clearance car. Naïve as I was, I had already tried to reach it back in the summer of 2016, but snow stopped me barely 4 or 5 kilometers in. It was clear I needed to plan better.
When I finally made it there in person, and spent a few hours with my camera, I realized it was a place that truly rewards you—except for the strong smell of sulfur, which makes it feel as if you’re carrying a box of rotten eggs by your side.
Editing this photo almost four years after I took it has rekindled my desire to head back into Iceland’s interior. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before I return.
