Spirits of the Cedars: Okunoin After Dark

My first time at Okunoin cemetery in Mount Koya was a trip of pure contrasts.

During the day, the path was bustling with pilgrims and travelers. But as soon as night fell, the place completely transformed, and we had it entirely to ourselves. It was just the two of us, surrounded by giant cedar trees and guided only by the warm, golden glow of the stone lanterns.

The silence was so deep you could almost touch it. That’s when you really get why this forest is so sacred. Legend has it that Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, didn't actually pass away. Instead, he rests here in a state of eternal meditation, waiting for the Future Buddha. That’s why thousands of people have chosen this spot as their final resting place, hoping to awaken right by his side.

Walking this path after dark isn't spooky at all—honestly, it just brings you this incredible, almost mystical sense of peace. ✨
