One for Sorrow
This image was created during low winter light using a Nikon Z8 and telephoto setup, with the intention of producing a darker, more atmospheric wildlife portrait rather than a traditional documentary image. I wanted the magpie to emerge subtly from the surrounding shadows while retaining enough detail to preserve the iridescent blues and feather structure.
The scene relied heavily on patience and positioning. The bird briefly settled on this weathered perch against a naturally subdued background, allowing the darker tones to simplify the composition and isolate the subject. Exposure was carefully controlled in-camera to protect the whites within the plumage while keeping the overall frame intentionally low key.
One of the main challenges was balancing detail within the deep blacks without losing the quiet mood of the scene. The final image was processed with restraint to maintain a natural atmosphere and tonal depth.
