An Encounter
This portrait was created using a three-light tungsten setup consisting of one Arri 500 and two Arri 300 fresnel lights, all shaped with barn doors for precise light control. The image was photographed on a Sony R3 against a black seamless backdrop to create a cinematic low-key atmosphere focused on expression, gesture, and tonal contrast.
The Arri 500 was used as the primary key light, positioned camera-left at approximately a 45-degree angle and slightly elevated above the subject. The light was narrowed using barn doors to illuminate mainly the face and hands while preserving deep shadows across the frame. One Arri 300 acted as a subtle rim light from behind the subject to create separation from the background, while the second Arri 300 provided minimal controlled fill to retain slight detail within the shadow areas without flattening the image.
A major technical challenge during the shoot was maintaining a completely black background while working with hard tungsten sources in a relatively compact studio space. The key light was carefully flagged off from the seamless backdrop using barn doors and controlled positioning to prevent spill from reaching the background. Another challenge was managing the heat produced by the tungsten fresnels. Since the lights were positioned relatively close to achieve the desired intensity and falloff, the set became extremely hot very quickly. This required the shoot to move efficiently so the model would remain comfortable and not feel overwhelmed by the heat coming from the fixtures.
The image was later converted to black and white during post-production to emphasize texture, facial structure, and the cinematic relationship between light and shadow.
